Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of receiving these certifications?

Certification as a Structured Literacy Teacher or Structured Literacy Interventionist demonstrates that an educator is highly trained to teach reading effectively to all students in the classroom, but particularly those for whom reading is a challenge due to a native language other than English, lack of language exposure, or other learning challenges. With a majority of states having passed literacy legislation in recent years, the demand is growing for teachers that are well-trained to deliver effective reading instruction in the general classroom and to work with struggling readers.

What is the best way to prepare for the exam?

The exam is based on the Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading. These can be downloaded from the CERI or IDA websites. References are included at the end of each section for further study. In addition, CERI is working to enhance the teacher training modules on the Reading Rockets website.

Prospective applicants interested in further study can contact the accredited university and non-university teacher training programs on the CERI website. Other training opportunities, such as one-week intensive sessions, will be announced on the CERI website.

What is the format of the exam?

The exam contains 110 multiple-choice questions (100 scored and 10 non-scored pretest questions) in three categories: recall, application, and analysis. Applicants will have two hours to complete the exam.

How soon will I know the results?

If you take the exam at one of PSI official testing locations you will receive your score upon finishing.  If you take a paper exam, or an exam at a 3rd party location, your score may be mailed to you depending on the testing location.

If I pass, how do I become certified by the Center for Effective Reading Instruction?

The results of your exam will be communicated by the testing company (PSI/AMP) to you and CERI. When you have received notice of passing the exam, you may download and complete the certification application and send it to CERI along with the certification fee.

What do I need to do in order to maintain my certification?

Certificants will be required to accumulate 10 hours of CEUs each year in order to maintain their certification. A list of approved CEU providers will be available on the CERI website.
