Kristia Akins is a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) through the Academic Language Therapy Association, a Certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist through The Center of Effective Reading Instruction, and a Certified Irlen Screener through the Irlen Institute. With over 1000 hours of training in the S.M.I.L.A. method, she has helped hundreds of students in public and private institutions improve their literacy and develop confidence. Kristia, who manages dyslexia and ADHD herself, holds a Master of Teaching in Instruction and Curriculum from the University of Memphis, and a Tennessee Teaching License with a Reading Specialist and TESOL (English as a second/foreign language) endorsement. She resigned from the public school system in 2015 to focus on homeschooling her son, who had begun to show signs of learning difficulties. Since resigning, Kristia has continued to learn and research evidence-based practices to better help overcome the struggles of reading. She is dedicated to helping children and parents cope with reading and learning challenges, working to make learning to read easier and more effective for future generations.
