Provider Bio

A native of Washington, DC, Amy moved to Connecticut in 2012. She received her B.A from Brown University, and holds a Master of Professional Studies in Elementary and Special Education (1-6). She is a certified elementary and special education teacher (1-6), and a Visiting Professor in the Literacy and English Education Department at Manhattanville College, and in the Literacy Department of the College of Education and Human Development at Sacred Heart University. Having spent significant time in schools, Amy has profound perspective on general education, self-contained special education, integrated co-taught and resource room classrooms. She completed her student teaching in Greenwich and Westport, and has taught special education in Darien.

Amy is a Fellow-in-Training Orton-Gillingham Practitioner through the Academy of Orton-Gillingham. She has training in Lindamoodbell’s Visualizing & Verbalizing, LIPs, Judith Hochman’s writing program (The Writing Revolution), and Preventing Academic Failure Multisensory Reading Instruction (PAF). Amy engages in ongoing professional development and has taken numerous courses, including those on early literacy and language development, executive function, literacy assessment and study skills for middle school at the Windward Institute.

In addition to providing comprehensive literacy assessment, consultative services, and OG instruction, Amy has extensive training in special education law and advocacy through William and Mary's Institute for Special Education Law and Advocacy, and the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates. She holds a J.D. from Georgetown Law Center. As a Connecticut Surrogate Parent, she provides educational advocacy to students under the jurisdiction of the Department of Children and Families who need or may need special education.

Ms. Halpert is passionate about evidence-based reading instruction, intervention informed by assessment and progress monitoring, and empowering families, educators and professionals with knowledge about the science of reading and the special education process.
