Dr. Janice Kohler-Curtis has over 30 years of experience in education. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Special Education at Kent State University where she studied under Dr. Timothy Rasinski. Her Master’s in the Art of Teaching was obtained through Marygrove College in Detroit, MI. Ms. Kohler-Curtis is a doctoral graduate from the Reading Science program at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Janice’s career began with teaching special education. After realizing that she needed additional support in teaching students with dyslexia how to read, she took a course through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE). Janice used this Structured Literacy approach for over 15 years with tremendous success. Because of the progress with her own students, Janice began mentoring other teachers in this approach. Janice Kohler-Curtis completed two intensive practicums with IMSE as well as a Train the Trainer program where she earned a Level 5 Master Instructor title. She joined IMSE’s 25-year mission to bring Orton-Gillingham to all teachers and students as a trainer and the Chief Academic Officer for nine years and the Chief Academic Officer with MGT Consulting. Now, Dr. Kohler is the Director of Curriculum at Mount St. Joseph University. She also owns a consulting company called Literacy By the Sea. Dr. Kohler-Curtis is an IDA-CERI certified Structured Literacy Interventionist. As a lifelong learner and teacher, Janice continues to support teachers and students through her passion for literacy.
