Laurie Dymes, Ph.D., is an accomplished educator and dyslexia interventionist with extensive experience across various educational settings. She currently serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Middle, Secondary, and K-12 Education at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she teaches courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs of education.
Laurie has been an integral part of Lincoln County Public Schools since 2006, where she has been recognized for her excellence in teaching through the North Carolina Educator Evaluation System and was named Lincoln County Teacher of the Year in 2023. She is also a National Board Certified Teacher in Adolescent and Young Adult Literacy and recently became certified as an Intensive Dyslexia Interventionist through the University of Florida's Literacy Institute. This specialized certification allows Laurie to provide targeted, research-based interventions for students with characteristics of dyslexia, ensuring that each student's unique needs are met through personalized support.
Laurie’s experience extends internationally, having served as an English lecturer in China from 2016 to 2018, as well as an international English program coordinator at Jiaotong University from 2018 to 2021. She continued her international teaching work in Vietnam in 2024, further enriching her ability to connect with students from diverse backgrounds.
Laurie is a strong advocate for research-based strategies in public schools and frequently presents nationally to educators and administrators. Through these presentations, she shares her personal journey of learning about dyslexia, the gaps in practices for supporting dyslexic learners, and the effective strategies she has discovered to help every reader succeed. Laurie has cultivated a nationwide network of passionate advocates for literacy and continues to be deeply involved in advancing support for dyslexic students. As a member of the International Dyslexia Association at both the national and state levels, she remains committed to ongoing learning and advocacy to drive improvements in the education system for students with dyslexia.
