I have been a special education teacher for 17 years and am currently working in Kildeer-Countryside School District 96 as a special education teacher. I have had extensive experience working with struggling readers as well as a wide range of student needs. I have found that structured literacy programs, such as SLANT, and their explicit and systematic approach to literacy and phonemic awareness skills, provides students with the direct instruction they need to close the gap and feel more successful as readers.
