I live on the east side of Cincinnati, Ohio, in Anderson Township. As a 37 year veteran teacher in the primary grades, I often saw students struggling to learn to read. Additionally, my fourth child who had every advantage of living in a highly literate home was diagnosed with dyslexia. The reading recovery program that was offered at his school was ineffective and I needed to learn more about the science of reading in order to help him succeed. I attended The University of Mt. St. Joseph and Mayerson Academy for an additional 24 graduate credit hours of the most up to date reading science courses. I passed the Ohio State Praxis test for teachers of Reading and earned a K-12 Ohio Reading Endorsement on my teaching certificate. As I implemented the Orton Gillingham strategies in my classroom, I saw the effectiveness of this explicit, structured, sequenced, multi-sensory approach to teaching reading as the students in my classroom became thriving readers.
I am currently a Master Teacher who trains teachers in Orton Gillingham techniques through the accredited Mayerson Academy. I have recently retired from the public school system and am accepting private clients. For me, it is both a privilege and a responsibility to teach individuals to read.
